Borussia Dortmund will begin their 2023/24 campaign with a trip to Regionalliga side TSV Schott Mainz in the first round of the DFB-Pokal on Saturday.

The wait is almost over and Borussia Dortmund will kick-off their 2023/24 season on Saturday, as they take on TSV Schott Mainz in the first round of the DFB-Pokal. Edin Terzic will hope that his side can register a straightforward win on Saturday and generate some momentum ahead of next weekend’s Bundesliga opener.

Borussia Dortmund will be without the injured quartet of Gio Reyna, Julien Duranville, Jamie Bynoe-Gittens, and Thomas Meunier on Saturday.

Karim Adeyemi is also expected to miss the trip to Mainz, although he has not yet been ruled out by the club. Felix Nmecha is also a doubt for Saturday’s game. But Terzic revealed during his pre-match press conference that Nico Schlotterbeck and Gregor Kobel will be able to feature after recovering from their respective injuries.

Emre Can will captain Borussia Dortmund in a competitive game for the first time on Saturday. His predecessor Marco Reus could be in the starting XI after impressing during pre-season.

TSV Schott Mainz were promoted to the Regionalliga last season, and will look to spring a massive upset on Saturday. It will be interesting to see what kind of test they offer to Borussia Dortmund. Terzic highlighted midfielder Tim Müller and forward Silas Schwarz as two key components of the TSV Schott Mainz squad on Thursday.
