Opinion: Borussia Dortmund’s ideal XI for the 2023/24 season
By Eli Brand
Right back: Marius Wolf
Dortmund has been linked with signing right backs this summer such as Ivan Fresneda. However, if a player is signed it would likely be as a backup to the once castaway Marius Wolf. Wolf impressed last season showing his excellent pace and endurance. Wolf ranks well according to Fbref in almost every attacking statistic while in the top 15% of fullbacks for shots, progressive carries, blocks, progressive passes received and touches in the attacking penalty area.
Wolf is a bit one dimensional at times against low blocks but still provides a solid option on the right. With Dortmund potentially looking to return to pressing higher up the pitch Wolf’s pace and energy will provide a solid option at right back.
With Guerreiro swapped for a more reserved player in Bensabaini, Wolf could have more freedom to get forward. This could enable Wolf to do what he does best and spend less time defending. While it is unlikely that he will replicate Guerreiro’s attacking output, Wolf could still provide more balance when playing as the more attacking of the two fullbacks.
