Edin Terzic did not pull any punches when describing Borussia Dortmund’s performance in their 1-0 win over FC Köln.

Borussia Dortmund began their 2023/24 Bundesliga campaign with a 1-0 win over FC Köln on Saturday evening. Donyell Malen’s 88th minute winner helped the Black and Yellows get the three points despite a rather below par performance. And Edin Terzic admitted after the game there wasn’t much that he liked about his team’s performance.

In an interview with Sky Sport, the BVB head coach said:

"“There wasn’t a lot that we liked. We like the fact that we took the three points and that we were dangerous offensively from set-piece situations. But there was far too much that we didn’t like. The only positive thing was that we came off the pitch as winners.”"

Terzic also felt that Borussia Dortmund were too passive for most of the game, and they had far too much possession in non-threatening zones.

"“If we want to achieve our goals, we have to improve our performances. We had a lot of possession, but we didn’t like the zones we had it in. We were far too passive in the first half, then we changed a few things; but that didn’t work so well either.”“We never occupied the defensive midfield area, lost the ball in the middle again and again and therefore had to face many counter-attacks.”"

Borussia Dortmund were outplayed by FC Köln for the majority of the 90 minutes, with Steffen Baumgart’s side creating the more dangerous chances despite having just 33% of the possession.

The win against Köln showed that Borussia Dortmund still have plenty of work to do if they want to challenge for the Bundesliga title this season.

Next up for Edin Terzic’s side is a trip to the Vonovia Ruhrstadion to take on VfL Bochum in the Ruhr Derby. This is a game Borussia Dortmund should win rather comfortably on paper. But Bochum have managed to keep BVB at bay in this fixture in each of the last two seasons. And we could be in for another close encounter next weekend, especially if Dortmund perform like they did against Köln.
