Final thoughts

In the end, a win is a win. Borussia Dortmund have the same points as Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen after Matchday 1. After last season’s trauma, this is the sort of result that everyone would have been happy with on the final day against Mainz in May.

Scraping wins when they need to is something Borussia Dortmund have got to get better at, and the result against Köln is a step in the right direction in that sense.

But the performance left a lot to be desired. And the players need to find a way to not be as lethargic as they were in this match and dig deeper to find inspiration.

It is no secret that there is a real lack of depth in this team. More often than not in this season, setbacks will mean that Borussia Dortmund have to improvise without their best starting XI every week.

Whether it be injuries or Bensebaini and Haller going to the Africa Cup of Nations mid-season, it will be the responsibility of all squad players to step up when they need to and also the management to find solutions when those setbacks inevitably arrive.
