Borussia Dortmund will reportedly not look to sign a new right-back for as long as Thomas Meunier remains at the club.

Signing a new right-back was viewed as one of Borussia Dortmund’s top priorities for this summer transfer window. The Black and Yellows had long-term interest in signing Iván Fresneda. But they ultimately pulled out of the race for the highly rated right-back’s signature, and he is now set to join Sporting CP.

Borussia Dortmund have not been linked with a move for a new right-back in weeks now, and it is looking increasingly unlikely that further reinforcements will arrive before the transfer window closes on Friday.

According to Ruhr Nachrichten, the BVB bosses will probably not sign a new right-back until Thomas Meunier is sold. The reason for this is the Belgian international’s high salary, which makes signing a new right-back too expensive for the club.

Meunier is free to leave Borussia Dortmund, but a move before deadline day is unlikely as he is currently sidelined with an injury. The 31 year old, who hasn’t played in a competitive game for the first-team since March, has less than 12 months left on his current contract with BVB. He has been linked with the likes of Aston Villa and Juventus this summer.

Thomas Meunier said last month that he feels comfortable at Borussia Dortmund, and is not going to leave the club just for the hell of it. The right-back joined BVB in 2020 on a free transfer from PSG, and has made a total of 75 appearances for the club.
