Borussia Dortmund’s poor start to the season continued on Friday, as they let a two goal lead slip and were held to a 2-2 draw by newly promoted side Heidenheim.

Borussia Dortmund somehow managed to drop points from a very comfortable position as a second half collapse saw them draw 2-2 against Heidenheim. The draw helped Heidenheim make history, as they claimed their first ever point in the Bundesliga. While BVB were made to pay for poor finishing, sloppy errors and careless defending in the second half.

Edin Terzic made two changes to his starting XI, with Niklas Süle and Karim Adeyemi replacing Mats Hummels and Felix Nmecha.

Borussia Dortmund looked lively from the off and it did not take them long to open the scoring. Julian Brandt gave BVB the lead in the 8th minute with a stunning finish from the edge of the box.

Emre Can then made it 2-0 from the penalty spot just eight minutes later after Lennard Maloney was rather harshly adjudged to have handled the ball inside the box.

Marcel Sabitzer then had a couple of chances to add to Borussia Dortmund’s lead. But he was first denied by the goalkeeper, before firing just wide from close range.

Heidenheim huffed and puffed for the rest of the first half but lacked the quality up front to cause any real problems to Borussia Dortmund, who went into the break with a comfortable 2-0 lead.

The away side started the second half in spirited fashion and were unlucky to have a goal disallowed by VAR for handball.

Borussia Dortmund then came close to adding to their lead, but Donyell Malen’s shot was well saved by the Heidenheim goalkeeper before Karim Adeyemi and Ramy Bensebaini also missed good chances.

Heidenheim kept plugging away, and their resilience was finally rewarded in the 61st minute as Eren Dinkçi halved the deficit with a fantastic finish.

A moment of madness from Sebastien Haller then handed Heidenheim with a golden opportunity to get back on level terms. And Tim Kleindienst made no mistake from the spot, as he made it 2-2 to leave the home crowd stunned.

Both teams had chances to take the lead late on, with Felix Nmecha hitting the crossbar from close range for Borussia Dortmund. In the end, the game ended 2-2 with Heidenheim taking home a well deserved point.

For Borussia Dortmund, the result spells disaster even this early in the season. To drop points in such a manner against a newly promoted side is inexcusable, and the result will certainly heap more pressure on Edin Terzic’s side. And things don’t get any easier after the international break, with a trip to Freiburg up next.
