What Niclas Füllkrug could bring to Borussia Dortmund

Niclas Füllkrug is a typical number nine who has the ability to score every type of goal. He is capable of scoring from a distance, but even more so as a poacher by finding space and being in the right place at the right time. His aerial ability is very strong and probably his standout attribute.

The 30 year old also excels while playing with his back to goal and linking up play with his teammates. He had 16 goals and 5 assists last season in the Bundesliga and 19 goals and 6 assists in the 2.Bundesliga in the season before that.

Füllkrug often likes to drop deeper and release passes into space, much like new Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane. His ability to get heavily involved in the build-up play could make him stand-out as Edin Terzic tries to figure out who his starting striker is.

Füllkrug succeeded in a two-man attack at Bremen alongside former BVB player Marvin Dücksch. Although if Terzic is planning on replicating that by fielding Füllkrug and Haller/Moukoko together at Borussia Dortmund, it might pose a problem elsewhere.

In order to accommodate two strikers, the Black and Yellows will likely have to utilise a 4-4-2/3-5-2 formation which will make the midfield more vulnerable and someone like Emre Can more exposed exposed.

If Terzic opts for a change to a back three – it is also worth mentioning that BVB’s lack of depth in defence doesn’t allow for a back three to be implemented – the lack of creativity offered by the wing-backs would come into question.
