Borussia Dortmund winger Thorgan Hazard has made the move to RSC Anderlecht in Belgium’s first division, the Jupiler Pro League.

Borussia Dortmund have parted ways with Belgian winger Thorgan Hazard as the player and club have reached an agreement with Belgian Pro League side RSC Anderlecht. Hazard joins the Belgian side after an entire summer where his position at Dortmund remained rather uncertain.

Over the course of the last two seasons, Hazard has had a limited impact on the pitch for Die Schwarzgelben. Signed in 2019 to much acclaim, Hazard had a productive first season with the team, scoring 7 goals and assisting a further 13 in the Bundesliga alone. This summer was spent in large part with the club looking to find suitors for Hazard and his compatriot Thomas Meunier. Both players have fallen down the pecking order and were seemingly set for futures away from Dortmund.

Hazard’s situation complicated however has head coach Edin Terzić allegedly saw Hazard’s performances in training improve significantly. This saw him firmly cement himself in Terzić’s plans to be a depth player for the squad, particularly in the full-back position. Dortmund’s stance towards Hazard has clearly been topsy-turvy, to say the least.

The club was very adamant that new players could not be brought in unless players were moved on, but Hazard’s move to Anderlecht has come too little too late as the transfer window in Germany is now closed. Hazard’s departure further worsens Dortmund’s position in terms of squad depth.

As for Hazard, a move to Anderlecht will give him a chance to re-assert himself and play vital minutes. Having been a good servant to the club, one can only hope that he finds his form again and becomes an important player for his new team.

Hazard is not the only winger to make the switch between the two clubs, as Dortmund signed young Belgian talent Julien Duranville from Anderlecht earlier this year. Duranville will have one less player to compete against with Hazard’s departure, which in itself may be a silver lining as we’ll get to see his talent shine more frequently once he is fully fit again.
