Borussia Dortmund’s Niclas Füllkrug likely to miss Freiburg clash through injury
Borussia Dortmund’s Niclas Füllkrug will most likely be sidelined for the club’s game against SC Freiburg in the Bundesliga this coming weekend.
Another week finds us face to face with yet another addition to Dortmund’s list of injury-laden absentees ahead of the coming match day against FC Freiburg. New signing Niclas Füllkrug will most likely not be able to feature for Die Schwarzgelben due to a tendon strain.
Prior to Germany’s game against Japan on the weekend, now former Germany national team coach Hansi Flick had mentioned that Füllkrug had left the Germany camp due to a “minor injury”. This was once again confirmed today by interim coach Rudi Völler, who stated that the German striker would certainly not feature against France, and was unlikely to play for Dortmund against Freiburg either.
For Dortmund, Füllkrug’s omission will come as a blow in the sense that there would have certainly been hopes to give the player additional minutes to integrate into the squad with his new teammates. From a depth perspective, striker is the only position Dortmund have a relative surplus in terms of players available to play in said position. Sébastien Haller, Youssoufa Moukoko and if needed, either Donyell Malen and Karim Adeyemi are all available to fill the position.
Dortmund go into the Freiburg game with one win and two draws, a five point return on a total possible of nine, which will be something the team will look to rectify on this coming Saturday. Füllkrug’s likely omission will be a frustrating one for head coach Edin Terzić, who pushed very hard for the player’s signature from Werder Bremen in the final days of the summer transfer window. All in all, Terzić and the team will have to navigate the situation regardless, and pull out a positive result to put their season back on track. Hopefully Füllkrug’s injury proves to be a minor setback and he can return to the team to help point their performances in the right direction.
