Marius Wolf blasted referee Jesus Gil Manzano after he gave Paris Saint-Germain a contentious penalty against Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday.

Borussia Dortmund began their UEFA Champions League group stage campaign with a 2-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday. While the defeat was a well-deserved one, the Black and Yellows were left frustrated after the home side was awarded a controversial penalty early in the second half.

The referee pointed to the spot after Niklas Süle was deemed to have handled the ball inside the box. Replays showed that while the ball did hit the centre-back on the arm, he was very close to Kylian Mbappe when the ball struck him.

Despite appeals from the Borussia Dortmund players, the referee decided against taking a second look at the incident and Mbappe gave PSG the lead from the resulting penalty. Achraf Hakimi then made it 2-0 soon after, all but ending BVB’s hopes of getting anything out of the game.

Marius Wolf commented on the penalty incident after the game. The right-back was critical of Jesus Gil Manzano and accused him of having an arrogant demeanour.

"“I just thought it was a shame how the ref reacted. He had an arrogant attitude on the pitch. He didn’t let people talk to him, even when they spoke to him calmly. That’s what pisses me off to a certain extent, too. If you treat someone with respect, then you also expect them to do the same. That was absolutely not the case.”"

Mats Hummels was also critical of the penalty decision, while Emre Can said that his appeals for the referee to take a second look at the incident fell on deaf ears.
