Borussia Dortmund seem keen on targeting additional attackers in the coming months, with reports indicating that they are interested in Athletic Club’s Nico Williams.

According to reports coming from Spain, Borussia Dortmund allegedly have a vested interest in targeting Spanish international Nico Williams. Williams (21) has impressed  for Athletic Bilbao and attracted interested from a number of clubs including the likes of Barcelona, Real Madrid and Juventus. Praised for his ability with both feet, pace and acceleration, Williams has been a threat for opposition sides when he’s appeared on either flank, but his natural preference seems to be on the right wing.

So far this season, Williams has registered 2 assists on 4 games, and excels in terms of progressive carries (5.73) successful take ons (2.92) and progressive passes received (11.07) per 90 when compared to players of a similar profile across Europes top five leagues. He is very much a player who likes to be involved in the attack and looks to position himself in advantageous areas on the pitch for his teammates to find and feed him the ball.

As of right now, the player currently has a 50 million euro release clause, but his contract runs out in 2024 making him an enticing free agent for any club. The player is also allegedly refraining from putting pen to paper on a new deal with Bilbao, which makes the likelihood of his free agency all the more possible. As a free agent however, the tug of war for his services will be significant and multi-faceted.

That being said, Dortmund’s incessant focus on additional attackers is more than a little troubling, considering the other areas on the pitch that need reinforcement. While the rumors are far from concrete at this time, signing Nico Williams would obviously be exciting, but rather unnecessary unless the club could indeed get him on a free and find space for him in a squad already well positioned on the wings while filling more necessary areas on the pitch with quality talent.
