Repeated defensive issues

Borussia Dortmund conceded from a set-piece again with another goal disallowed due to offside. Robin Gosens’ header was a low quality chance but proved that while BVB have improved on attacking set-pieces, there is still work to do on defensive set-pieces.

The disallowed goal highlighted an issue for Borussia Dortmund on set-pieces that has been present for quite some time.

Mats Hummels went early causing what could have been a comfortable offside to come down to mere inches. The communication on defensive set-pieces needs to improve with the defensive line needing to move in tandem.

Borussia Dortmund also conceded a penalty as Hummels again failed to be a step ahead of danger. While it was certainly a soft penalty, the veteran centre-back again was half a step late and made a tired attempt to win the ball. Hopefully, Edin Terzic and co. will work on these issues over the international break as a number of tougher tests lie in store for the BVB players after that.
