Niclas Füllkrug has admitted that he could have moved to the English Premier League, but joining Borussia Dortmund was his desired outcome.
Borussia Dortmund completed the signing of Niclas Füllkrug from Werder Bremen towards the end of the summer transfer window. But the Germany international has now revealed that he had the opportunity to move to an English Premier League club that plays in UEFA competitions before BVB came knocking.
In an interview with SportBILD (via Fussball.News), Füllkrug stated that once Borussia Dortmund’s interest became known, he immediately knew that he wanted to join them.
"“For me, it was clear: If I make a move, it has to be one where I feel a tingle in my stomach. I could have gone to England, for example, to a club that plays on the international stage. But I didn’t feel that tingle to leave Werder Bremen for it.”“I had to be very patient. It was only in the last week of the transfer window that BVB made an offer for me. I immediately felt a tingle with BVB. And I told him (Sebastian Kehl) that I am convinced BVB needs me – and I also need BVB.”"
Borussia Dortmund signed Füllkrug to compete with Sebastien Haller and Youssoufa Moukoko for a starting spot up front. Füllkrug has already established himself as the Black and Yellows’ first-choice striker, and has scored two goals in his first five appearances for the club.
Niclas Füllkrug was also linked with a move to Bayern Munich in the summer, before they decided to sign Harry Kane for a fee of around 100 million euros. The 30 year old believes that Bayern got their desired solution with the signing of Kane, and he got his desired solution with a move to BVB.
