Borussia Dortmund in Times Square: An interview with club legend Roman Weidenfeller
Roman Weidenfeller on Borussia Dortmund’s new signings and young players to watch
One of the biggest points of interest in recent months has of course been Borussia Dortmund’s new signings, which Roman Weidenfeller commented on during our interview, providing his insight on the new players and how they are faring in black and yellow:
"“We signed [Niclas] Füllkrug in the summer, we have [Ramy] Bensebaini, we have [Marcel] Sabitzer when he is not injured. We have a lot of options to always have a great team on the pitch, and the team is very flexible.”"
This flexibility Weidenfeller alludes to will certainly be tested in the coming months as Borussia Dortmund continue to face tougher and tougher opposition at the top end of the league and across Europe.
The flexibility mentioned is also, in part, thanks to the youngsters BVB have in the team. When asked about whether there are any youngsters we should watch out for to make a breakthrough in the coming season and play a role in Dortmund’s success, Weidenfeller highlighted Jamie Bynoe-Gittens as one to watch:
"“Bynoe-Gittens has come from our youth teams, and he has had great performances. He, of course, also signed a new contract in the last days. Our youth teams are [also] playing great. I saw the last game against AC Milan and it’s amazing to see how fast the young players are growing up.”"
Overall, the outlook Weidenfeller has for Borussia Dortmund’s development both on and off the pitch in the coming season is optimistic, and it is hard to disagree having seen the slow but apparent shift in how the team has been performing in recent games.
It is an outlook that will hopefully begin to permeate throughout the club and its fans, continuing to manifest as the club solidifies its identity under Edin Terzić moving forward.
Having obtained important victories in the league, the impetus will be on Borussia Dortmund to maintain this momentum and build on these positive results by continuing to learn from their past mistakes and sustaining a competitive focus on the match-days ahead.
