Borussia Dortmund came from behind twice and rescued a 3-3 draw against Eintracht Frankfurt to preserve their unbeaten run in the Bundesliga.
The spoils were shared at the end of a pulsating contest at the Deutsche Bank Park as Borussia Dortmund and Eintracht Frankfurt played out a 3-3 draw. The Black and Yellows once again managed to grind out a decent result without playing their best football, with Julian Brandt scoring an 82nd minute equaliser.
Marcel Sabitzer and Youssoufa Moukoko were also on target for Borussia Dortmund, while Omar Marmoush and Farès Chaïbi scored for Eintracht Frankfurt.
It was a fantastic game for the neutrals, as the Eagles dominated proceedings and played some devastating counter-attacking football in the first-half. While Borussia Dortmund did not let their heads drop and managed to turn what could have been a heavy defeat into a hard-earned point.
Gio Reyna made his first start of the season for Borussia Dortmund, coming into the team for the injured Felix Nmecha. While Salih Özcan started in defensive midfield with Emre Can sidelined. Julian Brandt managed to shake off his muscle injury to start on the bench.
Eintracht Frankfurt made a very lively start to the game and Gregor Kobel was forced to make an excellent reaction save early on to prevent Hugo Larsson from scoring. The home side was then awarded a rather controversial penalty just two minutes later after VAR spotted a handball from former Eintracht Frankfurt player Marius Wolf inside the box.
Omar Marmoush sent Kobel the wrong way and converted from the penalty spot to give the Eagles the lead. The Egyptian forward then doubled his tally in the 24th minute, taking full advantage of some lackadaisical defending from Borussia Dortmund.
And to make matters worse for BVB, Gregor Kobel was forced to come off after the second goal, having injured his nose earlier in the first-half due to being accidentally elbowed by Nico Schlotterbeck.
Despite being outplayed for the majority of the first-half, Borussia Dortmund did manage to find a route back into the game in stoppage time as Marcel Sabitzer found the bottom corner after some good work from Niclas Füllkrug.
The goal swung the momentum of the game in BVB’s favour, and they got themselves back on level terms after a strong start to the second-half. It was Youssoufa Moukoko who came off the bench and showed great composure to make it 2-2 in the 54th minute.
Farès Chaïbi then restored Eintracht Frankfurt’s lead 14 minutes later as he blazed past Ramy Bensebaini before firing the ball into the back of the net.
But Borussia Dortmund responded once again, with Julian Brandt finding himself in the right place at the right time after a blistering run and low cross by Karim Adeyemi.
Both teams had half-chances to get back in front late on, but the game ended all-square. Borussia Dortmund will certainly take the result in its stride, as it still keeps them very much in the thick of things at the top of the Bundesliga standings. Next up for BVB is a home game against TSG Hoffenheim in the DFB-Pokal before their crunch clash against rivals Bayern Munich next weekend.
