The bright spots and worrying signs from Borussia Dortmund’s season so far

Where Borussia Dortmund need to improve
Despite Borussia Dortmund’s recent run of form, there are still areas that require attention. The lack of depth, particularly in terms of creative and defensive options, is a great concern. The departures of Raphael Guerreiro and Jude Bellingham left a void in the creative department that has yet to be fully filled. The club should be more strategic when acquiring reinforcements.
In the early stages of the season, players like Marco Reus and Gio Reyna found themselves battling for game time. Fortunately, for Reus, his situation has improved considerably. He has been a key figure in the team’s recent success, and has been involved in four goals over seven Bundesliga appearances. As fans know, his impact goes beyond mere statistics, and he adds an intangible element to the squad.
Now as Reus’ time seems to be eclipsing in Dortmund, it should provide an opportunity for Gio Reyna. However, the situation remains unclear for the USMNT international, who has featured in just four matches for BVB this season. Despite his limited minutes, his talent suggests he could have a profound and game-changing impact on the team, given the opportunity.
Defensively, Borussia Dortmund’s thin centre-back and full-back options could become a major problem if injuries occur. The lack of foresight in the summer transfer market has left them vulnerable in this area. As rumours of potential January defensive signings increase, fans will hope to see a change in approach from the club.
The introduction of Niclas Füllkrug, while providing an attacking boost, raised questions about the team’s defensive reinforcement needs. While Füllkrug has performed well, Sebastien Haller’s form has also been inconsistent, making it essential to find a solution to this issue.
The handling of Youssoufa Moukoko has also raised concerns among fans. His limited playing time and reported friction with those in charge could potentially harm the player’s development. Ensuring his growth and happiness should be a priority for Borussia Dortmund.
