Borussia Dortmund to face Stuttgart in DFB-Pokal round of 16

Borussia Dortmund will have to overcome the challenge of VfB Stuttgart away from home if they want to qualify for the DFB-Pokal quarterfinals.

A tough away game against VfB Stuttgart awaits Borussia Dortmund in the DFB-Pokal round of 16. The Black and Yellows will go up against Sebastian Hoeneß’ in-form side next month, with a place in the DFB-Pokal quarterfinals on the line.

Borussia Dortmund claimed a 1-0 win over TSG Hoffenheim earlier this week to secure their place in the round of 16. While VfB Stuttgart beat Union Berlin 1-0. The Swabians have enjoyed an excellent start to the season, and are third in the Bundesliga standings.

Serhou Guirassy has been Stuttgart’s star performer this season, having scored 15 goals in just nine games across all competitions. The 27 year old will hope to return from his hamstring injury in time for the Pokal tie against Borussia Dortmund.

Edin Terzic’s side will view the DFB-Pokal as their most realistic chance of winning silverware this season. And they are among the favourites to win the competition, after both Bayern Munich and reigning champions RB Leipzig were eliminated from the tournament earlier this week.

Fellow contenders Bayer Leverkusen will take on SC Paderborn in the third round. While Borussia Mönchengladbach will host Wolfsburg. And 1. FC Saarbrücken’s reward for beating Bayern Munich is a home game against Eintracht Frankfurt. An exciting game also awaits Regionalliga side FC 08 Homburg, as they take on 2. Bundesliga leaders FC St. Pauli.

The DFB-Pokal round of 16 ties will take place on December 5-6, 2023, followed by the quarterfinals in late January.
