DFB-Pokal seems to be BVB’s only realistic target for a trophy this season

After Saturday’s game, Borussia Dortmund find themselves seven points behind leaders Bayer Leverkusen and five behind Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga standings.

Even though it’s not that big of a difference and there are still many games left to play this season, challenging for the Bundesliga title seems like a step beyond Borussia Dortmund’s reach based on current evidence.

As it stands, Borussia Dortmund’s only realistic shot at a trophy lies in the DFB-Pokal, where both Bayern Munich and reigning back-to-back champions RB Leipzig have already been knocked out.

Making a deep run in the DFB-Pokal and finishing in the Bundesliga top four is perhaps the ceiling for the current Borussia Dortmund squad. But the club must ask itself whether that is enough, or if they must have higher ambitions after years of underperforming.
