Edin Terzić acknowledges Youssoufa Moukoko’s contributions in recent weeks
Borussia Dortmund’s Youssoufa Moukoko has seen a spike in minutes over recent weeks, with the player contributing positively when given the opportunity.
For many months now, Youssoufa Moukoko’s situation at Borussia Dortmund has been a bit of a conundrum for onlookers who have been bewildered by his lack of involvement on the pitch. The lack of minutes has been seen as unwarranted, considering the significance the player holds for the club, as well as the ability he had previously shown on the pitch.
As of recent however, Dortmund head coach Edin Terzić has been giving the young German international minutes to great effect. Moukoko came on against Eintracht Frankfurt and scored one of Dortmund’s goals to make sure they secured a point in their clash. He also started against Hoffenheim in the DFB Pokal, and while he didn’t score, his performance was extremely promising, with the player directly involved in a lot of the incisive moments Dortmund had in Hoffenheim’s box.
The promise Moukoko has showed has led to Edin Terzić praising the player, and noting that his performances have left their mark, in his eyes:
"“We know Youssoufa’s qualities, he is hardworking, very good in running. There is no game in which Youssoufa did not have at least one chance on goal…Moukoko has drawn attention to himself.”"
Moukoko’s performances may mean that the player will be in for more minutes on the pitch as early as against Newcastle; a game that will have great significance on Dortmund’s possible Champions League fortunes this season. Dortmund have struggled to find a goal scoring talisman up front in the advent of Erling Haaland’s departure to Manchester City two summers ago, but there are hopes that in Moukoko, they may eventually have another.
While Moukoko does not fit the profile of player Terzić has shown he prefers up front (one with a more physical frame), his quality has been undeniable. He continues to ask questions with his performances, and his (long term) breakthrough looks like it could be imminent.
