Borussia Dortmund secured a vital 2-0 win at home to Newcastle United to take over top spot in their UEFA Champions League group of death.

The main message to come out of the Borussia Dortmund camp after their embarrassing 4-0 defeat against Bayern Munich this past weekend was that lessons would be learnt.

A tough test against Newcastle United awaited the Black and Yellows on Tuesday, knowing that a defeat would have put a real damper on their chances of qualifying for the knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League.

But Borussia Dortmund managed to pass that test in convincing fashion, thanks to goals from Niclas Füllkrug and Julian Brandt either side of half-time.

The win helped Edin Terzic’s side take a one point lead at the top of Group F in the UEFA Champions League. They also find themselves two points clear of third placed AC Milan, who claimed a come from behind 2-1 win over Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday.

Here are two takeaways from Borussia Dortmund’s 2-0 win against Newcastle United at the Westfalenstadion.
