Opinion: Why Gio Reyna deserves more playing time at Borussia Dortmund
By Brook Genene
Can Gio Reyna USMNT form be a catalyst for Borussia Dortmund turnaround?
Edin Terzic explained Gio Reyna’s situation recently by saying: “We are aware of the quality we have in the squad and the guys know their roles. They have to show good performances in training, and I show them how they can improve their performances.”
This perhaps gives a little bit of insight into what is maybe lacking on Reyna’s part. It is clear that the training ground is where you can impress your coach and that’s what the 21 year old may need to do to earn regular minutes at Borussia Dortmund.
While his role is restricted in Dortmund, Reyna is slowly but surely developing into a crucial player for his national team. He scored a brace for the USMNT against Ghana in just 45 minutes last month, and also put in an impressive display against Germany.
Reyna followed that up by scoring again for the United States against Trinidad and Tobago in the Concacaf Nations League earlier this week.
Given Borussia Dortmund’s need to change the trajectory, Edin Terzic may be forced to reconsider his team selection. This is where the opportunity for Gio Reyna lies. The attacking midfielder will need to seize the chance when some playing time finally comes his way. A strong international break with the USMNT would also go a long way in helping with that.
