Borussia Dortmund’s Youssoufa Moukoko hoping for Euro 2024 call up
Borussia Dortmund’s Youssoufa Moukoko continued his fine scoring form for Germany’s u-21s and is hopeful to make Julian Nagelsmann’s Euro 2024 squad.
The international break has once again been fruitful for Germany international and Borussia Dortmund striker Youssoufa Moukoko. Moukoko scored his 12th goal in10 games for Germany’s u-21s as they beat Estonia 4-1.
Moukoko’s form for the national team is once again a prime example of the talent the young striker possesses, and adds to the yearning many fans have to see him on the pitch for Dortmund more often. The performances themselves should help his case going forward, especially after the winter break when Sébastien Haller departs for AFCON with the Ivory Coast.
Moukoko has noted that he hopes to continue his form and possibly catch Julian Nagelsmann’s eye ahead of the Euros in 2024, which will be hosted in Germany. In a recent interview, the player made his goal very clear:
"“Anyone who has ever played for the senior national team has that [playing at the Euros] in the back of their mind. I always score the goals here because I get a full 90 minutes. It’s very good for me to get the rhythm. I’m happy to come here every time, there’s always a smile here…Nobody expected me to be there at the World Cup either. Let’s see.”"
Moukoko highlighting consistency in play is an important note to take into account, as despite his lack of minutes for Dortmund it’s clear that given the time on the pitch, he can clearly make a difference. The Dortmund striker’s statements put into perspective just how well a player performs when they are able to play with freedom and a smile on their face, and not merely be thrown into the fray at the end of games.
As for whether or not Moukoko will actually make it into the final Euro 2024 squad Julian Nagelsmann assembles, that still remains to be seen. Considering the lack of players Germany have that are able to play at centre forward, it seems likely that he will at least make the bench as a possible impact sub for the tournament should his form continue in this vein.
