Borussia Dortmund internationals: Marcel Sabitzer scores as Austria beat Germany
By Tushar Bahl
Marcel Sabitzer helped pile more misery on Julian Nagelsmann as Austria claimed a 2-0 win over Germany on Tuesday.
The international break ended in disappointing fashion for Germany on Tuesday, as they fell to a 2-0 defeat to Austria. Mats Hummels, Julian Brandt and Niclas Füllkrug played from the start for Germany, while Marcel Sabitzer featured out wide for Ralf Rangnick’s side.
The Borussia Dortmund midfielder opened the scoring for Austria with a beautifully placed finish from a tight angle in the first-half. Leroy Sané was then sent off for Germany, before Christoph Baumgartner chipped the ball past Kevin Trapp’s reach to double Austria’s lead and seal the win.
Germany’s second straight defeat of the international break added to Julian Nagelsmann’s woes. The former Bayern Munich head coach has won just one of his four matches since taking over from Hansi Flick in September, and will be under increasing pressure to get things right in time for the European Championship on home soil next summer.
Donyell Malen played from the start and got an assist as the Netherlands concluded their Euro 2024 qualifying campaign with a 6-0 win over Gibraltar.
Turkey came from behind to rescue a 1-1 draw against Wales, with Salih Özcan playing 90 minutes for Vincenzo Montella’s side.
Youssoufa Moukoko was on the pitch for 68 minutes as the Germany U-21s came from behind to earn a 3-1 win over Poland. Jamie Bynoe-Gittens was also in action on Tuesday, as he helped the England U-21s register a comfortable 3-0 win over Northern Ireland in the European U-21 Championship qualifiers.
With the international break now over, players will return to training with Borussia Dortmund as the focus turns to this weekend’s Bundesliga clash against Borussia Mönchengladbach.
