Back when the Champions League groups were drawn 3 months ago, teams like AC Milan were considered to be among the worst case scenarios for Borussia Dortmund. Yet on Tuesday evening, the Black and Yellows returned from their European travels in Italy having beaten AC Milan 3-1 in the Group of Death. They have qualified for the knockout stages of the competition with one game to spare.

Borussia Dortmund would have even won Group F on Tuesday, had it not been for the blasphemous penalty call that saved Kylian Mbappe and PSG’s skins against Newcastle United in the 97th minute.

It was a game of whirlwind emotions – some frustrations, nerves and excitement – but the overall satisfaction of the night was felt after a historic victory for Edin Terzic’s side.

Borussia Dortmund can still finish as Group F winners if they manage to avoid defeat at the Westfalenstadion against PSG in two weeks time. But for now, they can celebrate a well-earned win and qualification to the round of 16. Here are three lessons that we learned from the 3-1 win.
