Marcel Sabitzer

Marcel Sabitzer was a controversial signing from the beginning. Following a failed loan spell at Man United in 2023, Sabitzer left Bayern Münich for Borussia Dortmund for roughly 20 million euros. At 29 years old at the time, it seemed like BVB was overspending on an older player whose prime was already past him. However, Sabitzer proved doubters, including myself, otherwise.
Sabitzer had a great start to 2024 for Dortmund, scoring important goals for the Black-and-Yellows, including a screamer against Atlético Madrid to send his team to the Champions League semifinals, which was likely the last time I celebrated a BVB goal so passionately. But, despite his solid contributions, Sabitzer has drastically decreased in terms of performance heading to the 2024/2025 season.
With still no goal contributions in any competitions during the current campaign, Marcel Sabitzer has struggled to showcase his best football in any position in the midfield. More recently, Sabitzer has recovered his starting role as a number six with Kovač, which in some part has to do with Felix Nmecha's injury. Still, Sabitzer has not performed anywhere close to his best moments at BVB.
His contract expires in June 2027, which means that this could be the last shot Dortmund has to sell him for a fair amount. Indeed, it would be unrealistic for Dortmund to retrieve any value close to his transfer fee at his 31 years of age, and, still, maybe Sebastian Kehl could pull off another Füllkrug to West Ham type of deal for the Austrian.
