Gio Reyna

Gio Reyna is not an easy one to write about, primarily due to his academy background. As a BVB fan, we usually expect academy talents to thrive in Black-and-Yellow and prove the club's DNA of revealing high-level players like Mario Götze and Nuri Şahin. Reyna was no exception to this tradition, as his family roots in football and undeniable talents had fans excited for his professional jump.
However, Gio did not live up to the bar people settled for him, which is not necessarily his fault. Since he has been plagued by injuries his whole career, it was hardly conceivable for Reyna to establish himself on the team when there was no way he had a sequence while staying sidelined for so long.
At the same time, Reyna had a fair amount of chances to prove his worth as a starter, and still, he did not put in doubt Brandt's starting role in any instance. Even with Brandt massively underperforming this season, Gio Reyna finally seemed to have a shot to make his case for Dortmund's number 10. He, however, did not impress and only restablished himself as a '12th player' he has been up until this point.
It is definitely unthinkable to ship a 22-year-old player with a still-decent ceiling. However, with Reyna's contract running out in June 2026, it looks like a good occasion to make some value out of the American, as he is valued at 12 million euros, according to Transfermarkt. After all, not every academy talent will necessarily be a club legend, which makes selling a player with one year left on his deal and not yet proved himself a good piece of business.
