As Borussia Dortmund's season continued to unravel in Mainz, Emre Can was once again in the spotlight due to his poor defensive performance, which led to him being sent off.

Another action packed Bundesliga weekend passed by and it was another demoralising away defeat as Borussia Dortmund succumbed to Mainz with the scoreline of 3-1. With this latest defeat, BVB have now failed to win all five of their league matches away from home so far this season and have suffered six consecutive defeats on the road.

Once again, the attention was on Emre Can as his red card early on in the game significantly affected Borussia Dortmund's chances of pulling off a win. As a result of this, he is now suspended for the next two Bundesliga games, against Freiburg (November 23) and Bayern Munich (November 30).

As of late, Can has been receiving plenty of criticism for his performances, and questions are being raised whether he should still be a regular part of the team. Before dwelling deeper into this article, I would like to point out that to be fair, Dortmund's stuttering form this season so far can't be attributed to Can alone as mounting injuries and debatable tactical setups are also playing a part. That being said, lets focus on a few such games this season to get an insightful take on Can's performances and criticism.
