Borussia Dortmund 2-3 Barcelona: Three takeaways as BVB suffer first home defeat of the season

The Black and Yellows equalised twice, but it wasn’t enough to overcome Hansi Flick's punishing Barcelona squad.

A top eight finish is still attainable for Borussia Dortmund

After this matchday, Borussia Dortmund have fallen to ninth place in the league phase table, one position outside the automatic round of 16 qualification zone. Dortmund have twelve points from six games, with two matches remaining. In January, BVB will travel to Italy to face Bologna, and a week later they host Shakhtar Donetsk.

Bologna are eighth in Serie A and 33rd in the Champions League. It’s an away match, but BVB have done well in both Bruges and Zagreb. Shakhtar Donetsk are third in the Ukranian Premier League, and 27th in the UCL. These are winnable games.

There are currently six teams with 13 points, and four teams with 12, which shows just how tight this table is heading into the final two matchdays. If Dortmund can manage to win both of their games, I believe a few of the other teams in the table around them will inevitably slip up. Lille are in eighth, but face table-topping Liverpool in Ainfield in the next round.

In conclusion, Borussia Dortmund’s path to a top eight finish is entirely in their own hands, and I’m optimistic they’ll do it.
