When fans see rumors suggesting Jadon Sancho may return to Borussia Dortmund, we all get excited. With the club lacking identity, and key figures likely to depart this summer, bringing back a player like Sancho would be a major fan service. Yet this move has been made complicated first by Sancho’s initial transfer to Manchester United, and his current loan spell at Chelsea FC.
Jadon Sancho rose to stardom in Dortmund, where he made 104 appearances between 2017-2021, scoring 38 in the process. His move to Manchester City was supposed to propel the Englishman into a new tier of footballer, but his time at the Red Devils was mired by poor form, and a falling-out with then-manager, Erik Ten Haag.
Sancho’s desire to rediscover form led to his Rückrunde loan back to Dortmund last spring, where he made another fourteen appearances and scored two more. He was also an important member of the squad which reached the UEFA Champions League final. If there’s a non-Dortmund player who loves Dortmund more than Jadon Sancho, I’d love to know. (Marco Reus doesn’t count)
Yet the German tabloid, SportBild has reported that Borussia Dortmund has ruled out a return for Sancho, despite the player’s desired return. Sancho is currently on the books of Manchester United for one more year, but his loan to Chelsea will reportedly turn into a permanent transfer, despite Sancho’s underwhelming performances and questionable future at the club. This could leave the player in something of a transfer limbo, tied up in contracts which offer reduced playtime, and limited opportunities to rediscover form.
Perhaps another loan to Dortmund would play out in the future, but I must admit I feel bad for the player at this stage, as uncertainty encircles his future. Should Sancho make a return, I would hope for a long-term commitment.
