Talks between Borussia Dortmund and Nico Schlotterbeck over a contract extension are underway, with the centre-back also among the top candidates to become the club's next captain.

Nico Schlotterbeck has gone from strength to strength since joining Borussia Dortmund from SC Freiburg two years ago. The 25 year old has been ever-present for the Black and Yellows, establishing himself as one of the best centre-backs in the Bundesliga.

Borussia Dortmund are keen to ensure that Schlotterbeck stays at the club for years to come, with Sky Sport reporting that talks over a new contract are already underway between the two parties. Both sides are said to be relaxed about the situation at the moment, with the defender's current contract still having three more years left to run.

Schlotterbeck is also expected to be firmly in the running to become Borussia Dortmund's next permanent captain, with current captain Emre Can facing an uncertain future amid all the criticism of his recent performances from supporters.

Schlotterbeck captained Borussia Dortmund for the first time on Saturday as he led the team in the Bundesliga clash against Bayern Munich. After the game, he described it as an unbelievable feeling. "It meant a lot to me. I was extremely nervous before the game. If someone had told me this two years ago when I came here, I would have said they were crazy," he said.

Borussia Dortmund will no doubt hope that Nico Schlotterbeck pens a contract extension with the club in the coming months. The centre-back is a vital part of the club's long-term plans, and it will be interesting to see what the future holds for him.
