Nico Schlotterbeck may not have to spend as long as initially feared on the sidelines despite being forced off on a stretcher during Borussia Dortmund's 3-2 defeat to FC Barcelona.

Borussia Dortmund suffered a major scare on Wednesday evening as Nico Schlotterbeck had to be stretchered off at the end of the Champions League clash against FC Barcelona. But the Black and Yellows have now revealed that the 25 year old's ankle injury is not as bad as initially feared, and while he will be sidelined for the time being, a potential return before the end of the calendar year has not yet been ruled out.

Even if Schlotterbeck is unable to recover in time to play in Borussia Dortmund's final two games of 2024, the news will come as a relief to both fans and those in charge at the club.

Borussia Dortmund without any fit centre-backs in the first-team

The Germany international has been ever-present for Borussia Dortmund since joining the club from SC Freiburg in 2022 and is regarded as one of the most important players in the team. He has made a total of 20 appearances for BVB this season, missing only one game through suspension.

Borussia Dortmund are also set to be without Niklas Süle for their upcoming Bundesliga matches against TSG Hoffenheim and VfL Wolfsburg, as he is facing months on the sidelines due to an ankle injury. Waldemar Anton is also injured and it is unclear whether he will be able to play in the next two games.

With no natural first-team centre-backs currently fit, it will be interesting to see what solutions Nuri Sahin comes up with in the coming days.
