Borussia Dortmund are out of the DFB-Pokal after suffering a heartbreaking 1-0 defeat to Wolfsburg, with Jonas Wind scoring the winning goal in the 117th minute.
A dramatic late winner from Jonas Wind was enough to knock Borussia Dortmund out of the DFB-Pokal and add to Nuri Sahin's misery. There wasn't much to separate the two sides over the course of the 120 minutes, but in the end, it is yet another defeat away from home for the Black and Yellows.
It was a scrappy game between two out of form teams, and the injury-hit Borussia Dortmund simply weren't able to create enough chances to merit a place in the round of 16 of the DFB-Pokal.
Borussia Dortmund's woeful run of form continues amid injury crisis
With several key players sidelined due to injuries, Nuri Sahin was forced to field Pascal Groß at right-back and Emre Can at centre-back in the makeshift back four.
Maximilian Beier also made his return to the Borussia Dortmund starting XI and had the first real chance of the game. But the struggling forward could only hit the post after going clear on goal.
Borussia Dortmund dominated proceedings in the first-half, but Wolfsburg also looked dangerous whenever they ventured forward. For the away side, Groß delivered a number of strong crosses into the box, but Guirassy wasn’t able to find the desired connection.
The second-half was more the same, with Borussia Dortmund enjoying most of the possession while having to be wary of Wolfsburg’s counter-attacking threat. Chances came at a premium in the second-half, and the two teams could not be separated after 90 minutes.
So the game went to extra time and Wolfsburg nearly opened the scoring two minutes in, with only the crossbar preventing Tiago Tomás from finding the breakthrough. Felix Nmecha came close to scoring on the other end of the pitch, only for his shot to be blocked by the arm of a Wolfsburg defender.
Second-half substitute Cole Campbell caused a few problems to the Wolfsburg defenders in extra time on his second appearance for the first-team. Another youngster got the opportunity to come on in extra time, as 20 year old Jordi Paulina replaced Beier.
Then came the decisive blow as Borussia Dortmund failed to deal with a cross into the box, allowing Jonas Wind to find the bottom corner. And that’s how it ended, with Borussia Dortmund knocked out of the DFB-Pokal at an early stage yet again.
Questions will be asked of Nuri Sahin and some of his team selections over the course of the game. Borussia Dortmund are in a rut right now and things don’t get any easier for them with a home game against RB Leipzig next up in the Bundesliga, four days after playing 120 minutes and suffering a gut-wrenching defeat.
