Borussia Dortmund’s start to the new season has resembled the indifferent form shown last campaign. Nuri Sahin’s side has already reached double figures for goals in the Champions League, but miserable away results have made life difficult in Bundesliga.

How about the players who left the club in the summer on loan deals? Here we take a closer look at how the loanees have fared so far with their respective clubs.

Soumaïla Coulibaly (Stade Brestois)

Last season’s finalists Borussia Dortmund are one of seven clubs yet to drop points in the new Champions League era. The biggest surprise on that list of teams is Soumaïla Coulibaly’s Brest, who have never been in European competition until now.

The French defender spent time at Champions League debutants Royal Antwerp last season. His debut with Borussia Dortmund was also in Europe’s premier competition when he featured in the final group game at Copenhagen in the 2022-23 season.

Since joining the Breton club in the final 48 hours of the transfer window, he only started the 3-0 defeat to newly-promoted Auxerre in the league. But that European connection continued with standout performances in Brest’s stunning victories over Sturm Graz and RB Salzburg.

The new format will present more memorable fixtures as they look forward to the challenges of Bayer Leverkusen, Barcelona, and Real Madrid. The team coached by Éric Roy is currently in 11th place after seven matchdays played in Ligue 1.
