Mainz 05 3-1 Borussia Dortmund: Player Ratings
Alexander Meyer (6/10): Meyer made a couple of vital saves for his side over the course of the 90 minutes to prevent things from getting worse. But he stood no chance with any of the three goals.
Pascal Groß (3/10): It was a tired performance from Groß, who was once again asked to fill in at right-back. His lack of defensive skills were evident as the crosses for two of Mainz's three goals arrived from his flank.
Emre Can (2/10): Can certainly deserved his red card for his wild lunging tackle. It was one of those tackles where he simply couldn't help himself. And it cost the team big time. As club captain, he should be leading from the front. But once again, Can was found lacking in that department.
Nico Schlotterbeck (5/10): The Borussia Dortmund defence looked to be all at sea following Can's sending off. And Schlotterbeck wasn't able to help shore things up as the only natural centre-back in the team. He also missed a good chance to score late on, but by then it was too late to turn things around anyways.
Julian Ryerson (4/10): Perhaps not at full fitness after his recent spell on the sidelines, but Ryerson looked out of sorts and struggled to cope with the intensity of Mainz. Playing at left-back, the Norwegian international was a touch too late to react, especially in the lead-up to Mainz's second and third goals.
