Felix Nmecha (2/10): After an encouraging few games, Nmecha fell back to old habits against Mainz as he delivered a lethargic performance first in midfield and then in central defence. The midfielder, who recently earned a recall to the Germany squad, was lacklustre and slow and was caught napping for both of Mainz's first-half goals. Granted, he is not a centre-back and had to fill in there after Can's red card, but the way he just stood still and failed to put in even the minimum effort was disappointing to see.

Marcel Sabitzer (5/10): Sabitzer once again played through the pain barrier but wasn't able to make much of an impact in midfield. He put in a laboured shift, but it was clear that he was exhausted after a gruelling few weeks.

Julian Brandt (5/10): The gruelling fixture list also seemed to have taken its toll on Brandt, who wasn't able to inspire the team to victory. He worked hard to try and make things happen, but Mainz were comfortably able to limit his influence on the game.
