Borussia Dortmund to Pass on Carney Chukwuemeka Permanent Deal?

The young Englishman has shown promise, but his fitness is too much of a risk.

The 21-year-old English talent, Carney Chukwuemeka, joined on loan from Chelsea at the end of the January transfer window. He was seen as an exciting young player who was ready to prove himself to a first team after being relegated to the Reserves at Chelsea.

Carney Chukwuemeka was quick to impress Borussia Dortmund fans with his electric pace and skillful technical ability. However, many have been wary of a permanent transfer given how little the Englishman has featured for Dortmund, his lack of match fitness, and the high asking price set by Chelsea FC, said to be in the range of 30-35 million euros.

With just one match in the season left to play, local newspaper Ruhr Nachrichten reports that Borussia Dortmund have decided against pursuing a permanent deal for Chukwuemeka. The player has played just over 300 minutes for Dortmund, which is far too small a sample size to make such an expensive decision.

Sebastain Kehl still considers Chukwuemeka’s loan move a success, however, stating:

"Our idea in the winter was to increase competition within the squad. From that perspective, both signings were very good."
Sebastian Kehl

From this perspective, Kehl is right; Chukwuemeka added more depth to the squad, and perhaps he even inspired certain players to return to their top form. Julian Brandt, for example, has improved immensely since Chukwuemeka’s arrival. Kehl’s quote is tactful too, as he is additionally referring to Daniel Svensson, BVB’s other loan player, who just signed a permanent deal. While Chukwemeka's loan hasn't materialized into something greater, Daniel Svensson's signature appears to be a bargain!
