Borussia Dortmund defender Yan Couto has confirmed his desire to continue his career with the Black and Yellows next season. Couto had a rough first year with BVB, but he's ready to battle for his place in Niko Kovac's squad.

Speaking to Flashscore.com during the FIFA Club World Cup last week, Couto was asked about his future in Dortmund. The Brazilian right-back wants to fight for his place in the squad next season, and he's determined to prove his doubters wrong.

"I came here last season with the intention of playing regularly. I left Girona to get more minutes on the pitch. It was a tough season at first, adjusting to a new environment, but of course, I want to play. This tournament (FIFA Club World Cup) gave me that chance, I played in every game, and I think it was a good experience, a good level of competition. I want to keep that momentum going and continue getting minutes. I still need to speak with the club and we will see what happens next season. But my desire is clear, I want to stay at Dortmund."

Couto made 35 appearances in all competitions in his maiden campaign for Die Schwarzgelben. He mainly played off the bench as a substitute, assisting in one goal in the DFB-Pokal.

He appeared in 21 league games, eight in the Champions League and one in the domestic cup. He played all five games in the Club World Cup, including the quarterfinal loss to Real Madrid.

The 23-year-old star initially arrived on loan from Manchester City in August before Dortmund triggered his €30 million release clause in October.

He'll be battling Julian Ryerson for the starting right-back position, though he can also play right wing-back if Kovac uses a three-man backline. He has a contract with BVB until 2030.
