After Curaçao equalized against Germany in their first game of the World Cup, there was palpable tension in the camp of the four-time world champions. However, up stepped Nico Schlotterbeck from a corner and made his chance count with a sublime header to give Germany the lead once again.

Nico Schlotterbeck can announce himself to the world with his performance at the World Cup.
He has consistently been Borussia Dortmund’s key player over the past few years.

His performances in the Bundesliga and Europe have caught the attention of clubs like Liverpool and Bayern Munich.

At 26, the World Cup offers Schlotterbeck the opportunity to show the whole world what he is capable of.

Even though he is not a new name, the German international can use the World Cup as a springboard to catapult himself into the ranks of the biggest names.

Schlotterbeck is a well-rounded defender. He is comfortable playing with the ball; his long-range shots and tackling technique are among the reasons so many eyes are on him.

Despite extending his contract with Borussia Dortmund last April, there are reports that clubs like Real Madrid could acquire Schlotterbeck by activating his release clause.

With a managerial change in Madrid, Schlotterbeck may well be changing clubs after the World Cup. Borussia Dortmund have engaged in lengthy contract negotiations with the German Center Back, but given the history of the club of letting go of star players every summer, it would be no surprise that Nico can move to Madrid.

The good news that can come out of this might be that Schlotterbeck’s stock might rise as a result of his World Cup performance, which can cause a bidding war and a hefty fee for the star defender.

Schlotterbeck is rated highly for this tournament according to WhoScored at 9.03. This shows how valuable the player is.

If Schlotterbeck and Tah manage to form a formidable partnership, Bayern may be tempted to move for the former. However, unlike Real Madrid, Bayern doesn’t have the option to trigger the 50 million euros.

Another club interested in the star defender is Liverpool. The Reds reportedly have the option to trigger the release clause just like Real Madrid. They are also in the market for a center back after Ibrahima Konate has left the club following the end of his contract.

All eyes, and not only those of BVB faithful, will be on Schlotterbeck this summer. It will be interesting to see what the German defender decides about his future. Will he remain a leader and one of the highest-paid players at Dortmund or will he be tempted by the possible attractive offers on the table? Only time will tell.
