It's been reported that Manchester United still might owe upwards of 20 million euros for their purchase of Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund in 2021. Despite playing his current season for Chelsea FC, minority club owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe revealed the dilemma Manchester United find themselves in, going as far as suggesting Sancho isn’t unique in that he no longer plays for Manchester United. However, the club still owes payments for his deal.

"For Sancho, who now plays for Chelsea, and we pay half his wages, we are paying £17 million to BUY him this summer."
Sir Jim Ratcliffe

Jadon Sancho made his initial transfer to Manchester United in the summer of 2021 for a fee of 85 million euros, in an agreement that would see Manchester United make the payments in a series of five installments, which were reported to be scheduled over a five-year period. That would mean that at least one installment is still owed on Sancho, and BVB should be receiving some funds this summer.

While it’s not clear what the split was between the five payment installments or how Sancho’s loan deal returning to Dortmund last spring affected these payments, we can still confirm from Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s statement that money is owed on Sancho. Sancho joins a long list of high profile players who transfer to Manchester United for large fees, flop there, then find new clubs where they return to top form.

"We are going to pay £89m this summer for players we have not signed. Even if we do not sign anyone this summer, we will have to write a cheque for £89m."
