Salih Özcan arrived in Dortmund in 2022 from FC Köln for the small fee for five million euros, and he’s since played 59 matches in Black and Yellow. Unfortunately for Ozcan however, he has never scored in for Dortmund, and his form has frequently been below the BVB standard. His poor form earned him a loan to Wolfsburg for the 2024-25 season when it became clear then manager Nuri Sahin had no plans for the defensive midfielder.
But with an injury crisis, and tumult in management, Özcan was recalled during the January transfer window, and given another opportunity to don the Black and Yellow. Yet as Niko Kovač arrived and stabilized the team, Özcan’s minutes diminished week by week as he was relegated to the bench with some cameo substitute appearances. Moving into next season, Borussia Dortmund would like to rebuild their midfield and Salih is a top candidate for sale.
Now, Sky Journalist, Patrick Berger reports that newly promoted FC Köln are interested in bringing their youth academy player home. Özcan remains highly respected by the management and fans in Köln as he was a beloved player when he was there. It would be a dream for the Billy Goats to see Salih Özcan player in their colors again.
One aspect which could make a move difficult, is the fact that Salih Özcan would likely have to take a pay-cut should he return to his former club. Though talks of a transfer have not formally opened yet, Özcan is expected to leave this summer.
