Could Borussia Dortmund’s squad (and hierarchy) see major departures this summer?

Several prominent players, as well as back-room members, could be forced out of the club this summer if results don’t improve.

It’s recently been reported that Niko Kovač could see the exit door as soon as this summer should Borussia Dortmund fail to qualify for Europe. There’s allegedly a clause in his contract that could see the Croatian trainer receive reduced severance should he fail to qualify the Black and Yellows for Europe. But he’s not the only one who could see the exit door.

Many players could be on the chopping block this summer as Borussia Dortmund plan a squad overhaul. Loan players Youssoufa Moukoko and Sebastian Haller do not seem to have futures at the club. Moukoko played just 202 minutes at Nice, and Sebastian Haller only scored one goal for FC Utrecht. Neither has impressed abroad, giving the Dortmund board little confidence in their futures in Black and Yellow.

As things stand, both Emre Can and Julian Brandt have little prospect of contract extension unless they can regain form soon. It’s clear both players are essential to Niko Kovač’s system, but both Brandt and Emre Can have contracts expiring in 2026, so unless they can improve, BVB could try to offload them this summer.

There are also questions internally regarding Marcel Sabitzer, who has underperformed this season and is rumored to have a negative attitude in the dressing room. He is yet another player BVB could offload in the coming months.

One of the biggest questions about Borussia Dortmund’s future also revolves around Sporting Director Sebastian Kehl. Should Borussia Dortmund fail to qualify for Europe, Kehl will likely shoulder much of the blame and become a victim of Dormund’s managerial reshuffle.

While we can speculate, there’s still one thing that is very evident: Borussia Dortmund is performing far below expectations. If they keep playing like this, a reorganization on all fronts may be necessary to keep the club alive.
