Lack of Leadership: Who Should be Borussia Dortmund’s Captain?

With a scarcity of leadership, fans' dissatisfaction with current captain Emre Can, and a new manager on the books, could BVB name a new captain soon?

Kobel has become an incredibly reliable keeper for Borussia Dortmund over the last few seasons and was even the vice-captain in the previous season. Nuri Sahin had opted not to include Kobel in the captaincy hierarchy because he’s a keeper, which can make captaining a team difficult. After all, the keeper is frequently far from the play and is less able to speak with the referee. This is not always seen as a dealbreaker; for instance, Bayern Munich’s Manual Neuer, Bayer Leverkusen’s Lukas Hradecky, and Frankfurt’s Kevin Trapp are all keeper Captains. The more significant concern about Gregor Kobel is whether or not he will stay in Dortmund this summer should the Black-and-Yellows fail to qualify for the UEFA Champions League or any European competition for that matter. However, missing out on UCL could be an opportunity for the Swiss shot-stopper to reaffirm his commitment to Dortmund and lead them back into Europe.
