According to Sport Bild, Matthias Sammer is to remain at Borussia Dortmund following internal turmoil and rumors regarding his departure. However, his role at the club will not be the same as that of an advisor.
Previously, Sammer had the role of an advisor to the management, who was also involved in counseling in sporting decisions. For instance, Sammer had previously submitted transfer proposals and was present with the squad during planning meetings.
Lars Ricken, who is to become CEO when Hans-Joachim Watzke retires, plans to offer Sammer a new contract in the coming days. Ricken now aims to change Sammer's role as a kind of personal advisor to him. Sammer's main responsibilities would resolve around providing support with strategic decisions to Ricken.
Lars Ricken was previous known for making strong demands to Sebastian Kehl and Sven Mislintat regarding the winter transfer window as Dortmund were in the worst moment in the season and in need of new players. Mislintat ended up becoming collateral damage, while Kehl stayed as sporting director.
Matthias Sammer was also rumored to be dismissed, as Ricken was reportedly advised to do so. However, Sammer stayed, and Ricken seems to have been given him another chance to prove his worth in a new role. Even so, this new function seems to be affecting Sammer's decision-making at the club, which could be a strategy from Ricken to control Sammer and keep him close to him. It would definitely be interesting to see how that new dynamic plays out.
