It would be easy to assume that Borussia Dortmund have had a worse season this time out compared to the last campaign. In 2022/23, it looked inevitable that BVB would lift the Bundesliga title but the less said about the final day, the better. This time out, though, they sit fourth in the German top flight.
However, it's through no fault of their own that teams around them have improved massively. Looking at BVB from the micro perspective, it is easy to indicate the micro-improvements from some of their players, having a big impact on the team.

1. Ian Maatsen
Yes, a loan player does make it into the list. It would be incredibly unfair to not include Ian Maatsen in this list, given that he's been one of the best players for BVB despite signing on loan just a few months ago.
They say don't fall in love with loan players but it's impossible for BVB fans not to do exactly that with Ian Maatsen. In his first proper season donning one of Europe's most competitive leagues, he seems incredibly comfortable. He has already scored a goal and provided two assists in 11 Bundesliga appearances.
Stepping up a level, Maatsen is making a case for BVB to consider signing him permanently at the end of his loan spell.
