Borussia Dortmund have one of the best financial models in the world. Particularly in the 21st century, they are infamous for signing some unearthed gems, giving them a lease of life and turning them world-class, before selling them for great profit.

That said, here are the five players who generated Borussia Dortmund the most amount of profit...

For clarity, transfer fees are all taken from the same source (Transfermarkt) and for the fun context of this article, "profit" is calculated by taking away Borussia Dortmund's sale fee from their initial signing fee. Please do not rely on this figure for accurate profit margins.

1. Ousmane Dembele (€100m profit)

As far as transfer business is concerned, not many transfers have been quite as fruitful as bringing Ousmane Dembele to Borussia Dortmund.

The Frenchman was signed by BVB in 2016 from Stade Rennais. The transfer fee was a reported €35m, paid by Borussia Dortmund to Stade Rennais. Dembele then spent one year with Borussia Dortmund, emerging as one of the best young players in the world at the time.

After Dortmund paid €35m for Dembele and got a great year of service out of him, he was sold. Barcelona paid €135m to Borussia Dortmund for Ousmane Dembele, generating €100m in profit for Borussia Dortmund.
