Borussia Dortmund end Der Klassiker hoodoo with stunning 2-0 win over Bayern Munich
Borussia Dortmund finally ended their winless Der Klassiker streak as goals from Karim Adeyemi and Julian Ryerson helped them beat Bayern Munich 2-0.
Five years on from their last Der Klassiker win, Borussia Dortmund did the unthinkable and stunned Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena. Karim Adeyemi opened the scoring at the end of a blistering counter-attack early on, before Julian Ryerson made sure of the three points late in the game with a sublime first-time finish.
It was by no means a spectacular performance by the Black and Yellows, but they certainly earned the three points by maintaining their defensive discipline and frustrating Thomas Tuchel's side over the entirety of the game. Their reward was a first win away to Bayern in the Bundesliga since 2014.
Perhaps deflated by Bayer Leverkusen's late comeback win over Hoffenheim earlier on Saturday, Bayern Munich seemed to be lacking their usual swagger and weren't able to dominate proceedings like they often do against in this fixture.
With two key players in Gregor Kobel and Donyell Malen sidelined, Edin Terzic decided to recall Jadon Sancho and Karim Adeyemi. Felix Nmecha also started in place of the suspended Marcel Sabitzer, while Julian Brandt kept his place in the starting XI ahead of the in-form Marco Reus.
It was clear from the outset that Borussia Dortmund would need to produce a resolute and disciplined defensive performance to have any chance of taking down Bayern, and they did exactly that in the first-half.
Whenever Bayern looked to find a way past the Dortmund defence, Mats Hummels and Nico Schlotterbeck were there to deal with the danger. The veteran defender put his body on the line time and time again, showing just why he remains so important to Borussia Dortmund even at the age of 35.
Borussia Dortmund did not have much in terms of chances in the first-half, but a sight of goal is all Karim Adeyemi needed to open the scoring after just ten minutes. Julian Brandt played Adeyemi through on goal on the counter-attack, and Sven Ulreich failed to keep out his first-time shot.
Felix Nmecha nearly doubled BVB's lead early in the second-half, but his goal bound effort was parried away by Ulreich. While Bayern dominated possession in the second-half, Borussia Dortmund looked the more likely of the two sides to score whenever they ventured on the counter-attack. And the second goal finally arrived in the 83rd minute, with Julian Ryerson making the most of a rare foray forward by finding the bottom corner after being picked out by Sebastien Haller.
Harry Kane thought he had given Bayern a way back into the game in the 89th minute. But his header was ruled out for offside, handing three precious points to Borussia Dortmund.
The result will come as a massive boost for Borussia Dortmund, who have now won their last five games across all competitions. A finish in the top four certainly looks attainable now for Edin Terzic's side, and Bayern's title charge seems to be going up in flames.
