Borussia Dortmund's struggles away from home in the Bundesliga continued on Saturday as they were deservedly beaten 2-1 by Union Berlin.

Just days after their stunning 7-1 win over Celtic in the UEFA Champions League, Borussia Dortmund were handed a stark reality check as they were beaten by Union Berlin in the Bundesliga. First-half goals from Kevin Vogt and Yorbe Vertessen handed the Black and Yellows a well deserved defeat in the German capital.

Nuri Sahin's side were second best right from the get go, and barring a short period in the second-half, they simply did not do enough to test the well drilled Union Berlin defence.

Slow start costs Borussia Dortmund in defeat to Union Berlin

As often proves to be the case for Borussia Dortmund away from home, they failed to take control of the game in the early stages. Union Berlin started well and deservedly took the lead mid-way through the first-half with Kevin Vogt finding the back of the net after Nico Schlotterbeck clumsily fouled Benedict Hollerbach inside the box.

The capital club kept pushing for a second, and came close on a few occasions in the first-half. The second goal finally arrived on the stroke of half-time, with Yorbe Vertessen firing past Gregor Kobel after Borussia Dortmund failed to clear their lines from a corner.

Borussia Dortmund looked a lot sharper after the half-time break, and managed to halve the deficit at the hour mark. It was former Union Berlin player Julian Ryerson who scored, finding the bottom corner after an excellent run on the left flank.

While BVB applied the pressure as they pushed for an equaliser, they simply did not create enough clear-cut chances and Union Berlin were able to hang on for the three points.

The defeat is an all-too-familiar one for Borussia Dortmund, who have now failed to win any of their last five matches away from home in the Bundesliga (four defeats and one draw). BVB's away record is something that desperately needs to be fixed if they are to compete for the Bundesliga title this season or even make the top four.
