Borussia Dortmund could look to recruit Julian Nagelsmann as the club's next head coach
Borussia Dortmund find themselves in a very precarious situation at the moment in terms of their performances in the Bundesliga. Head coach Edin Terzić has been under immense scrutiny this season as the club has lacked any long term consistency in terms of their performances.
Just to put things into perspective, the club has 5 wins from their last 15 games in all competitions, which translates to a 33% win rate for Edin Terzić over this stretch. It’s no surprise then that reports are starting to filter in that Dortmund are exploring the market for possible successors to their current head coach this summer.
The most recent candidate to be announced is Julian Nagelsmann. Nagelsmann has ample experience coaching in the Bundesliga, having coached Hoffenheim, RB Leipzig and Bayern Munich. As we already know, his credentials speak for themselves and it’s not a surprise that the club have him on their radar. Nagelsmann is currently at the helm of Germany's national team until the conclusion of the Euros this summer.
Whether he will end up being the candidate the club go with in the end is another story. For one, convincing Nagelsmann to join Dortmund may not be a simple task, with the German likely fielding offers from England and Spain too. The other matter to keep in mind is Nuri Sahin.
Sahin came in from Antalyaspor this season to be an assistant coach for Terzić, but it’s hard for me to believe that he wasn’t promised the possibility of leading the club himself one day, especially because he decided to give up a head coach position in Turkey to do so. Sahin was doing well with Antalyaspor so the thought that he could be ok with continuing to wait in the wings is unlikely.
That being said, a few years with Nagelsmann at the helm could possibly do Sahin some good, as he’d be learning from a legitimate tactician, which would likely help his development as a coach more than playing second fiddle to Terzić. Time will tell what Dortmund choose to do in the end, but the club look to be heading for a large scale rebuild, with the likes of Nagelsmann perhaps set to help in that regard.
