Borussia Dortmund is reportedly interested in Hugo Larsson
While the summer transfer window may be over, that hasn’t stopped the rumor mill from linking Borussia Dortmund with additional talented players who may be in line to join their ranks at the next opportunity. According to Frankfurter Rundschau, one of the next players in focus for Borussia Dortmund seems to be Eintracht Frankfurt and Sweden midfielder Hugo Larsson.
Larsson (aged 20) is having a strong start to his second season with Frankfurt, with 2 goals to his name already across 4 Bundesliga appearances. The young Swedish international is capable of playing as a box-to-box midfielder as well as a more deep-lying playmaker, making him a versatile option for Frankfurt’s midfield and an important component in linking the club’s defense and attack.
Dortmund’s interest in Larsson is already well documented, with the player having been linked with Die Schwarzgelben before choosing to join Frankfurt. At the time of his signing, Frankfurt invested 8-9 million euros for his services, and considering his now 28 million euro valuation, it is safe to say Frankfurt will eventually make a sizable profit if/ when he ends up departing Die Adler.
Dortmund is of course not the only club reportedly vying for Larsson’s signature, with Bayern Munich also interested in the player. Both clubs have quite stacked midfields and it would be very interesting to see just where either would try to fit him in at this time.
For Dortmund, departures in midfield would be necessary to accommodate Larsson’s profile in the squad at this time. Felix Nmecha is one player who comes to mind, who was also brought in to play that sort of box-to-box role we’d likely see Larsson operate in. Marcel Sabitzer, Pascal Groß and Dortmund youngster Kjell Wätjen can also operate in this capacity so should Dortmund look to acquire another midfielder, it would likely be a more defensive profile that they’d look into. There is a scenario where Dortmund looks to use Larsson in a more defensive midfield position (which he has played for Frankfurt), but considering the club’s needs, they may be more keen on finding a player that occupies the position on a more regular basis.
On top of Larsson’s tendency to fill a role that others in the Dortmund midfield currently occupy, as mentioned, he’s likely to be a rather expensive acquisition should Frankfurt choose to part ways. His contract is in effect until 2028 which will only push his value higher than the aforementioned 28 million euro sum.
While Larsson is a very exciting young player, (and a player I’d personally love to see play for Dortmund), the current personnel at the club in addition to his potential fee may be a bit too much for Dortmund to make a move for the player. If there are departures, however, he would certainly be high on my list of possible replacements for the club to look into with regard to a more box-to-box player.
