Borussia Dortmund loan watch: Disastrous PL spell for Gio Reyna; Tom Rothe shines in 2. Bundesliga
By Tushar Bahl
Three Borussia Dortmund players were out on loan in the recently concluded season and had mixed results. Here we take a look at how they fared.
Tom Rothe
The talented left-back could not have asked for a better campaign, having joined 2. Bundesliga side Holstein Kiel on a season-long loan deal last summer. Rothe played a crucial role in Kiel’s bid for promotion to the top flight. He started regularly and came up with a number of clutch goal contributions, including against Borussia Dortmund's arch-rivals Schalke and Hamburger SV.
In total, Rothe scored four goals and assisted a further ten playing at left wing-back as Holstein Kiel clinched promotion to the Bundesliga for the first time in the club's history. He showcased his immense potential in attack time and again, with his pinpoint crossing ability and shrewd movement proving to be crucial in Kiel's promotion bid.
It will be interesting to see what the future holds for the 19 year old, with Kiel keen to bring him back on loan for another season. A return to Borussia Dortmund is also very much an option, although the prospect of regular playing time in the Bundesliga may be too good to turn down for Rothe.
